Art As An Anchor

September 10, 2018

That’s how I feel with my phone. My photo stream is clogged with snippets of sky, corners of buildings, flashes of reflected sun.

MOST OF THESE END UP IN THE TRASH FOLDER, BUT IT DOESN’T STOP ME FROM ZOOMING IN AND SNAPPING AWAY.

When I walk down the street, I wish I could nudge my fellow pedestrians and point to whatever it is I’m seeing. My husband gets fed up with this constant pointing and secretly (although not anymore now, right?) calls me Pointer. But that’s okay because I enjoy sharing life’s beautiful details, and I couldn’t stop even if I wanted to.

WHAT MOTIVATES ME TO CONTINUE CREATING?

It’s the art, the idea, the beauty, and the fun of feeling my body move around a canvas. It’s a mental and physical exercise to see if I can translate an image in my head to the surface in real life.

In the constant day-to-day routine of baby things—feeding, changing, playing, teaching, repeating (side note: do you ever notice yourself saying things two times to a baby?)—I often think, “Okay, that’s it. I’m going to take a break from painting, I don’t have the energy.”

BUT SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDST OF BUSY HANDS WASHING DISHES OR WASHING BABY, A COLOR OR IMAGE POPS UP, AND IT WILL NOT LEAVE ME ALONE.

Often what I see in my mind are the abstracted forms of what I’ve witnessed outside. Mountains, flowers, sunshine—they simply become colors and shapes and feelings. Then the motivation to paint again floods back, has to get out.

When I paint, I think about what draws me in when I look at a photograph or painting or memento. What resonates is a jogged feeling or memory, a rooting to a prior time or place or emotion.

IN THIS WAY, ART SERVES AS A GROUNDING FOR MY PEACE AND HARMONY—AN ANCHOR.

Art reminds me that I have the ability to come back to my truest self whenever I want to access her. Art is a form of self-care, in that I put things on my wall, on my nightstand, on my screensaver that remind me to be grateful, to take a deep breath, to stay aware of my ever-supportive family and my roots. So in one painting or photograph, I can be filled with happiness.

I PAINT FOR MYSELF. BECAUSE THE INSPIRATION NEEDS TO GET OUT SO THAT MY MIND DOESN’T INCESSANTLY SPIN IT AROUND AND AROUND.

But I also paint for others. Because I know how anchored to my inner self I feel when I look at that painting of the rolling hills of my childhood done by a local artist. Because I remember the fun day in Virginia with my aunt and uncle picking out a big, red, abstract painting as a college graduation present. Because I feel happy and proud to have a painting by a high school friend in my foyer. Maybe I can provide a tranquil, grounded feeling to someone who has my art on her wall. Maybe I can make her feel joyful, innocent, and connected to her deep-down self.

I’m motivated to point to the beauty, to turn out my inside thoughts, to create tangible anchors to memories and emotions.

The Strong Mothers Project

July 20, 2018

I got such enjoyment out of creating the above mother-baby figure study for Mother's Day this year. I could feel the warmth and love as I was painting it, as if I were holding my own child.

Hannah and Ean at the beach

Hannah and Ean at the beach

Therefore, I've decided to paint a dedicated collection of figure studies depicting mothers/mothers and children. I am in awe of the strength it takes - physically, emotionally and mentally - to raise a child, but also the necessary softness. From this place of strength and softness together, I will be launching The Strong Mothers Project this fall (2018). I welcome participation from all mothers and can't wait to engage their incredible power!!

My hope is to get lots of moms involved and excited, no matter your child's age (maybe they're an adult)! While I have a number of models already, I'd love to welcome anyone else who feels passionate about the interplay of strength and softness that comes with motherhood.

Here are the two ways to get involved:

1. Become a work of art - Send me a photo of you/you and your child that you cherish from which I can paint (see example photo of Ean and me below). You can choose the size of the painting, and you'll receive an automatic 20% off my standard commission pricing, as well as free shipping, which could be a $250+ value if you go really big!

2. Sponsor the project - As a Paint Sponsor, you're monetary support will enable me to purchase paint and canvases to create this collection.

For $50, you will receive the following benefits:

-Every time I post or talk about the project, I will mention/list (and tag/link to) my sponsors

-Each sponsor will receive 1 dedicated IG post, 1 dedicated Fbook post (not a duplicate of IG post), and 3 separate dedicated IG story posts between now and the end of 2018

-Each sponsor will have the opportunity to guest blog on my website if you so choose with links to your business or whatever you want

-I will highlight each sponsor within one of my email newsletters

Please let me know what questions I can answer, and I hope something sparks your interest! I'd love to have all of you join the project! Use this link to send me questions, let me know you're IN, and get painting prices.

Summer 2018 Reading List

July 7, 2018

My Kindle is overflowing, even though I make it a point to read a chapter or two every night before bed. Did you know that with Prime membership, you have access to free books and magazines every month?! Who has the time? Hence the overflowing.

Since people always need a good book rec, I figured I'd share some of what I'm reading this summer. And if you have any good recommendations, please drop them in the comments below!! Because I could always read more!

(Some of these links are Amazon affiliate links for which I may get compensated if purchases are made. It does not change the price to the purchaser.)

Your Inner Critic is a Big Jerk by Danielle Krysa

So many truths about how we talk ourselves out of things, and particularly as artists that cycle of thinking, Is this good enough? Some practical suggestions about creative practices, even for those who don't self-identify as artists (you are still creative!!!)

32 Yolks: From my Mother's Table to Working the Line by Eric Ripert and Veronica Chambers

At times, a sad story, but Ripert's optimism and work ethic through it all makes for a feel good memoir.

Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook It by Anthony Bourdain (As of 7/7/18, the Kindle Edition of this book is only $1.99 !!!!!)

I read this before Anthony Bourdain sadly and tragically took his own life, as a fan of the man and chef/food memoirs in general. Fascinating for anyone who wonders what's really going on behind the scenes of the food world.

The Lost Vintage by Ann Mah

I haven't read it yet, but I love everything by travel and food writer, Ann Mah.

Calypso by David Sedaris

I really can't get enough David Sedaris. His essays are laugh-out-loud funny, awkward and addictive.

Look Alive Out There: Essays by Sloane Crosley

Another author whose body of work I truly enjoy...and apparently I'm into humorous essays these days. What's not to like? Sloane recounts her life in New York with all of its absurdity but also its banality.

When Life Gives You Lululemons by Lauren Weisberger

From the author of The Devil Wears Prada the story follows former head assistant, Emily. Total mixed reviews on Amazon but if you go into it knowing that it's just enjoyable fluff, then you'll enjoy the fluff!

Matchmaking for Beginners by Maddie Dawson

A light, magic-filled novel about a woman starting over in Brooklyn. Easy read.

Nobody's Perfect: Writings from The New Yorker by Anthony Lane

I haven't started this yet, but since I find humor essays, well, humorous, this description from Amazon pulled me in: "For ten years, Anthony Lane has delighted New Yorker readers with his film reviews, book reviews, and profiles that range from Buster Keaton to Vladimir Nabokov to Ernest Shackleton. Nobody’s Perfect is an unforgettable collection of Lane’s trademark wit, satire, and insight that will satisfy both the long addicted and the not so familiar."

Awakening Shakti by Sally Kempton

Another on the nightstand (an actual physical book this time) that I'm excited to read. All about feminine energy and the goddesses of yoga.

My Holiday in North Korea: The Funniest/Worst Place on Earth by Wendy Simmons

A really funny and eye-opening look at one journalist's trip (because vacation is definitely too strong a word) to North Korea.

Well that's probably enough to tide you over for now. I also have a list of baby-related books and kids books that I've read over the past 11 months, which I'll have to save for another day :)
